SAFETY RULES AND PROCEDURES
- Always wear your lifejacket and ensure that it is secured properly.
- Only under exceptional circumstances your guide might request you to remove your lifejacket.
- Always secure your valuables with the rope supplied inside your canoe.
- Should you have any medical condition that your guide should know about please tell him.
- Apply sunscreen and wear a hat to protect you against the sun.
- Although a leisure activity ensures that you drink water to avoid dehydration.
- Always stay in the paddling formation as indicated by your guide.
- Your guide will dictate the pace of the trip.
- Follow the instructions from your guide and PLEASE ask should you be unsure of something
- HIPPO DRILL. Please listen carefully and always stay well away from hippopotamus.
"DO NOT"
- ALWAYS stay with the group.
- NEVER dangle any part of your body in the water, crocodiles are NOT vegetarian.
- Do not go too fast
- No swimming in the river is allowed.
- Litter, keep our beautiful river clean and tread lightly, only leave thoughts...
- Do not panic when you encounter wildlife - stay calm.
Please note. The
canoe safari
is a leisure experience and not a race against time.
SAFARI TIMES
Makora Quest operates every day of the year and although we might change our route depending on the water levels, the times are as indicated below.
- Half day: 08h00 - 12h00 or 14h00 - 18h00
- Full day: 08h00 - 17h00
- Multi day: 08h00 (Day 1 Start) and 11h00 (Day 2 Finish)
For both the half day and full day
safari options a light snack and beverages are included in the price. For the multi
day safari, a two course dinner is provided on the first night, followed by full English breakfast on the next morning and light lunch at the take out when the
safari comes to and end. Camping equipment is included in the rate.
FITNESS LEVELS
As it is a very leisurely activity no previous experience is necessary and a basic level of fitness is required.

10 years of age (half day) 12 years of age (full day) and in both cases should the minor should be accompanied by his/her parent or minder.

GUIDES
Our guides are all fully qualified canoe guides with an exceptional knowledge of the fauna and flora that will be encountered on the canoe safari.
SAFETY
As our main priority we place a very high premium on the safety of our clients and as part of our standard routine our clients will receive the safety briefing and a short briefing on the paddling of the canoes before the trip starts. Our guides are all qualified in handling of medical emergencies and all communication is either by Radios and/or Mobile phones.
GAME
The
Zambezi
Game Park in
Zimbabwe and Mosi o Tunya
National Park on the Zambian side is along the banks of the
Zambezi River
. This part of the river is known for its pods of
hippos and abundance of
birdlife.
THE ROUTE
Launch site upstream of the
Victoria Falls
. Halfway we stop on an island for lunch.. At our take out point we serve drinks before we take you back to your accommodation.
FOOD
Lunch is provided on the island on all Full day
canoe safaris, the menu is a selection of salads, cold meat, quiche and chicken served with soft drinks and beer. NOTE: Dietary requirements provided on request.
EQUIPMENT
- Our canoes are two man fibre-glass "klepper" canoes designed for novices. They are extremely stable and fitted with bucket seats.
- Life jackets are provided and must be worn at all times whilst on the river.
- The guides have pelican water tight boxes that provide limited storage of client's cameras.
WHAT TO WEAR
- Sunglasses, the strings for sunglasses are not provided, ensure that your sunglasses are secure around your neck.
- Wear comfortable clothes that can get wet, such as shorts and a T-shirt with a jumper during the winter months.
- A hat and comfortable shoes (takkies/running shoes) that may get wet.
WHAT VALUABLES TO BRING
The following can be used as a guideline.
- Camera, binoculars, sun block and insect repellent.
- We do sell Makora Quest rafting shorts and T shirts - ask your guide - if you are interested bring some money.
- Passport if staying in Zimbabwe and visa fees if applicable.
